THEME: Fly an airplane through hoops for points. Avoid obstacles such as birds, balloons, clouds, etc.
BONUS: Do a loop around stars.

Yeah! Our first design challenge.

I'll get right on it.

6 days later, here is my first ever submission for the first ever Hamster Studios Weekly Challenge. I hope the judge(s) will be nice to my game. Overall I am pretty proud of the result.

Downloads:
avionik_game.zip: The game package
avionik_source.zip: The source file (GameMaker 8.0 Pro)

Please, take 2 seconds to read the official instructions:
Use Left and Right Mouse button to go up and down.
A to slow down.
Q to accelerate.

For Next Challenge, I would like to:
- Need to keep track of time I work on the project.
- Have user tests earlier (but kinda difficult on such a small schedule)

What I would like to add in the next version:
- Sounds
- Scoreboard
- Need better level transition
- Need better credits and instructions.
- Need better graphics :)
- Level Boundaries.
- Ring collision detection is a bit dodgy.
- Better controls
- More sheep

And thus we conclude our first weekly minigame challenge!

I would like to thank all of our submitter(s) for their efforts on the project.

As I had never really elaborated on how the game would be judged, it might seem a bit unfair to some that I now attribute points based on my arbitrary system. Yeah, sucks to be a submitter.

So, the score will be out of 10

  • THEME: 5 out of 5, the game completely embraced the idea of the theme! YAY!!
  • CONTROLS: 0.25 out of 1, I had a hard time reconciling why the buttons one above the other controlled going faster or slower, the buttons one beside another control UP AND DOWN. I convinced myself that an WASD would have been better, and then swore at the dev team when WASD wasn't working. I'm not sure two input devices were necessary. However, the controls WERE smooth, when I could remember how they worked. That's worth a quarter point.
  • GRAPHICS: 1 out of 1, the game does not look displeasing!
  • SOUND: 0 out of 1, didn't really hear anything while playing. Maybe I should have turned off my MP3 player to be sure...
  • FUN: 1 out of 1, quite amusing, I really enjoy adding extra challenges for myself, such as going through hoops upside down.
  • BRIBE: 0 out of 1, this was sorely lacking...

This gives us a total of 7.25 out of 10

But WAIT!! There's MORE!! As per the game description, there is a BONUS attributed if the game had starts that the player can loop around. While there isn't really a need to 'loop' around the stars, the basic premise has been complied with, and as such, the bonus will be awarded. That's gives one additional point.

Our hero's final score is 8.25 out of 10. I declared him the undisputed winner.

I think we're going to need a trophy. And more competitors.

So I am trying to produce a proper review table:

Criteria Score Comments
Theme (5) 5 The game completely embraced the idea of the theme! YAY!!
Controls (1) 0.25 I had a hard time reconciling why the buttons one above the other controlled going faster or slower, the buttons one beside another control UP AND DOWN. I convinced myself that an WASD would have been better, and then swore at the dev team when WASD wasn't working. I'm not sure two input devices were necessary. However, the controls WERE smooth, when I could remember how they worked. That's worth a quarter point.
Graphics (1) 1 The game does not look displeasing!
Sound (1) 0 Didn't really hear anything while playing. Maybe I should have turned off my MP3 player to be sure.
Fun (1) 1 quite amusing, I really enjoy adding extra challenges for myself, such as going through hoops upside down.
Bonus (1) 1 While there isn't really a need to 'loop' around the stars, the basic premise has been complied with, and as such, the bonus will be awarded. That's gives one additional point.
Total (10) 8.25 I declared him the undisputed winner. I think we're going to need a trophy. And more competitors.

After a lengthy conversation with myself, peppered by occasional responses by Smon, we've decided that as we have a new 'rating' system, that games submitted previous to this system should be regraded. Part of me things this is just because Smon's jealous of my kick ass score on my game. Without further ado, here I go again!

Criteria Score Comments
Theme (4) 4 The game completely embraced the idea of the theme! YAY!!
Bonus (1) 1 While there isn't really a need to 'loop' around the stars, the basic premise has been complied with, and as such, the bonus will be awarded. That's an additional point.
Fun (2) 1.75 Quite amusing. I really enjoy adding extra challenges for myself, such as going through hoops upside down.
Graphics (1) 1 The game does not look displeasing and nothing appears to have been stolen from the Intertron. Full marks!
Sound (1) 0 Didn't really hear anything while playing. Maybe I should have turned off my MP3 player to be sure.
Total(10) 8 I declared him the undisputed winner. I think we're going to need a trophy. And more competitors.
