BeSter

In a nutshell: Bejeweled and Zoo Keeper clone.
Status: Closed.

BeSter History

Dev. Time: from November 2007 to April 2008

December 2009
Since I decided to dedicate the website to small games I create in my spare time, I gave BeSter its own space. More game will (hopefully) come shortly, but take BeSter for what it is: A Simple Match-3-In-A-Row game that I did to learn how to programs with Arrays.
Final Version: 4.00

BeSter is my first *home made* game project that I decided would make it to the outside world. Obviously, it’s a Bejeweled/Zoo Keeper clone but it was an interesting coding challenge without being slowed down by game design (although, with the help and suggestions from my development team, some pretty unique features got in). I am pretty glad how the whole thing turned out.

Ahoy! Well, the game is getting closer to where I would be comfortable releasing it in the wild and moving to something else. See, my main problem is that I start a new game project every week, leaving aside my previous endeavor, so most of my ideas don’t get as far as BeSter.

I am pretty glad how the whole adventure turned out and I hope I can stay focus on another concept long enough to do it again.

New Features List:
- Added a new mode: Nonstop. Play until your eyes bleed.
- Added a Hint button: Stock? No problem. Click that bad boy.
- – BUT, use it cautiously in Clock Mode, since you are loosing 5 sec. each time you press it.
- New in-game and menu musak.
- Made Tutorial a tad nicer.
- Clock Tiles can now give you more time then you started with.
- In Clock Mode, the Completion Time is now displayed correctly.
- In Clock Mode, when submitting your highscore to the website, the level you’ve reach is automatically added to your name.
- In Nonstop Mode, when submitting your highscore to the website, your time is automatically added to your name.

My producer, lead tester and her team got together and provide me with tons of feedback! So, with all that knowledge a new version of BeSter was born, Mr. 3.00.

What should you expect from this AMAZING new version? Let’s see:
- More points when doing “Combos”
- Two new special tiles:
- – The Bomb (Unlocked on level 3).
- – The Clock (Unlocked on level 6).
- A few more sounds.
- A few more graphics.
- A better level balance.

Julie and Ariane (with the help of her associate testers) really provided incredible comments and as a result I am really proud of this version.

Well, our new lead tester, Ariane Larouche (totally related), didn’t loose any time in finding bugs. This release fixed a big one that stopped you from completing Level 9. All should be good now.

Now, for the next version:
- Improved the Score screen at the end of a level (add more stats).
- Add more sound effects.
- Change the way the timer works.
- Add Bomb Tiles.
- Add Time Tiles.
- Add Combo Multiplication.
Released Version: Alpha 2.00 (Ed: No longer available).

Wow… I’ve actually managed to release another version of BeSter. But why, do you ask? Well, I did some kind of graphic overhaul, which mean that I find it nicer now. Additionally, I’ve started adding sound to the game, so you have something to listen while having Xtreme Fun.

So, what’s new:
- New and improved graphics.
- New sound effects.
- Now support 10 levels (un-tested for now, sorry).
- New funky score screen (with fireworks!).
- Optimization here and there.

Hey Kids! Here is the first playable version of the game. It’s nothing to write home about, or even original, but it was fun to develop. Especially on the programming side, dealing with multiple arrays to plan the player possible moves.

In future versions, I would like to:
- Streamline the message boxes (right now, I use windows regular message box because it was simpler).
- Add some sort of score bonuses when you create combos.
- Add the time you had left at the end of a level to your total score.
- Add a hint system, that when pressed, tells you possible moves, but remove some of your time left.
- An easy mode, that let the game highlight tiles of the same colors when you select one.
- Add sound effects.
- Probably some more stuffs down the road…
Release Version: Alpha 0.70 (Ed: No longer available).

Here is the first version I release on the intertron (Ed: No longer available).
Julie is helping me by providing wise advices, testing and cold beer, so she gets high praises and the Producer title!
